The quality of the air we breathe is an extremely important issue for Maine. Ozone and smog caused by pollution contribute to Maine's high rates of cancer. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, is found in much higher levels in the air in Maine than in other parts of the country. This is estimated to cause 163 cases of lung cancer a year in Maine (From Healthy Maine 2010: Opportunities for All, Maine CDC).
The resources on this page will help you to understand the issue of air quality, and find ways that you can help make sure that the air you breathe is clean and safe.
