Water quality is an important issue that impacts the health of everyone in Maine.
More than half of all Maine people get their drinking water from wells. Over 1 in 10 wells in Maine has arsenic levels above current health benchmarks. As many as 20% of domestic wells have radon levels, which can influence the concentration of radon in the air (From Healthy Maine 2010: Opportunities for All, Maine CDC). Meanwhile, some of Maine's lakes, streams, and beaches suffer from contamination and pollution, making them unsafe for swimming or fishing.
