It is hard for many of us to be as active as we should be. In 2005, a survey by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System found that only about half of all Mainers get the recommended amount of physical activity. In 2006, the same survey found that one out of every five Mainers did not get any exercise in an entire month. It probably isn't surprising that nearly three in five people in Maine are considered obese or overweight.
Staying active and exercising is one of the most important things that you can do to stay healthy. A report by the U.S. Surgeon General in 1999 found that being physically fit can reduce your risk of developing diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and colon cancer, while helping you to control your weight and control feelings of depression or anxiety. It also reduces your risk of dying prematurely.
