Asthma in Maine

Asthma is becoming a bigger and bigger health problem in the United States. In the past 10 - 20 years, cases of asthma and costs have more than tripled.  Currently, over 5 million children in the United States are asthmatic.

Mainers share this burden. New England has the highest rate of adult asthma in the U.S. In 2004, Maine was found to have the highest asthma rate in New England (Asthma Regional Council). Asthma effects about 128,000 people in our state, including 28,000 children. This has a big impact on life in our communities. The Maine Asthma Prevention and Control Program estimates that asthma causes about 65,000 school absences and 37,500 work absences each year in Maine.

If you are concerned about asthma, you are not alone. Many in Maine, especially children and young people, suffer from asthma. However, there are ways to deal with asthma and lead a full, normal life.
