Diabetes in Maine

Diabetes is a real problem in Maine, and it's only getting worse. The Maine Diabetes Prevention & Control Program estimates that about 7.4% of the Maine adult population (about 72,053 adults) is diagnosed with diabetes. For every two people diagnosed, experts estimate that there is one person who has diabetes but hasn't been diagnosed - an estimated 36,027 Mainers. Diabetes-related hospital stays, and deaths linked to diabetes, are rising.

It doesn’t have to be this way. It is possible to quickly diagnose and treat diabetes. We even know how to delay or prevent the onset of the most common type of diabetes, Type 2 diabetes. We know how to live better with diabetes. We can listen and learn from our neighbors who manage their diabetes well. We can take action and save lives. We invite you to join the fight against diabetes at home and in your community.
